Plants Are Not Thinking the Way We Think. That Is More Interesting.
The temptation to anthropomorphize
Popular science has a recurring habit: when an organism behaves in a sophisticated way, we describe it using words borrowed from human psychology.
Plants "communicate." Fungi "network." Trees "remember."
Sometimes these metaphors help. Sometimes they obscure more than they reveal.
The remarkable thing about plant biology is that it is intelligent without needing to resemble a human mind.
Coordination without a brain
Plants respond to light, chemicals, touch, temperature, water availability, and attacks from herbivores.
They can alter growth patterns, allocate resources, and change chemical defenses.
None of this requires a central command center.
Instead, plants use distributed biological mechanisms.
A different model of intelligence
Human intelligence is associated with nervous systems, memory, language, and deliberate behavior. Plants evolved along a different path.
That does not make them primitive versions of animals. It makes them different kinds of biological systems.
Consider roots. Their growth patterns respond to local conditions. Different parts of a plant can react to different stimuli while remaining part of one organism.
This resembles a network more than a centralized computer.
Why the distinction matters
Calling plants intelligent can become misleading if it makes readers imagine tiny plant brains making plans.
The better story is stranger.
Life can produce complex, adaptive behavior through structures that do not look anything like our own cognition.
That has implications beyond botany. It reminds us that evolution does not repeatedly build the same solution.
It builds solutions that work.
And sometimes those solutions are distributed, slow, chemical, and almost completely unlike us.
The next time you see a vine changing direction toward light, you do not need to imagine a thought behind the movement.
The underlying biology is fascinating enough on its own.
Nature does not owe us a familiar definition of intelligence.
