The Internet Is Physical, and We Keep Forgetting That
A cloud with cables underneath
We talk about the internet as though it were an atmosphere: everywhere, weightless, endlessly available. But every photo loaded on a phone, every video streamed at midnight, and every artificial intelligence model queried from a laptop depends on a very physical collection of things.
There are cables under oceans. There are warehouses full of servers. There are electrical substations, cooling systems, fiber routes, backup generators, and technicians working through the night.
The cloud is not a place. It is a logistical achievement.
The long route of a simple click
Your request travels through a local network, into an access provider, across switching points, and toward a server that may be hundreds or thousands of kilometers away. The answer then makes the return journey.
The process is so fast that it feels instantaneous. That speed can make the infrastructure invisible.
Your device -> local network -> backbone -> data center -> backbone -> your device
Every arrow represents equipment, maintenance, energy, and money.
Why geography matters again
For a supposedly borderless network, location matters enormously. Data centers prefer places with reliable electricity, suitable climates, abundant land, and access to fiber. Countries want these facilities because they bring investment, but they also raise questions about energy demand and water use.
Meanwhile, cable routes create strategic vulnerabilities. A physical cut can disrupt digital services for entire regions.
The result is an interesting paradox: the more digital our lives become, the more important physical infrastructure becomes.
Designing for resilience
Companies used to treat infrastructure mainly as an engineering concern. Increasingly, it is a business concern and even a civic one.
Resilient systems require:
- Multiple network paths.
- Geographic redundancy.
- Local recovery capabilities.
- Clear incident communication.
The next time someone says the internet is everywhere, it is worth asking a second question: where, exactly, is everywhere?
The answer is a map of cables, buildings, batteries, rivers, roads, and electrical grids. Our digital world may look abstract from the screen, but underneath it is stubbornly, beautifully physical.
